The brown pelican was removed in November of last year from the endangered species list. President Theodore Roosevelt established the first wildlife refuge on Pelican Island to protect the bird from humans. It is now considered to no longer need federal protection. The brown pelican was removed from the endangered species list in Florida and the Atlantic coast in the 80’s, but it is now removed from the list for the entire nation.
