Prince Charles over the years has taken a keen interest in environmental urban design. He founded an organization for this specific purpose, the Prince’s Foundation for the Built Environment. The Foundation helps find solutions to reduce the use of materials in construction and production, as well as reducing emissions into the water and air and cutting down on energy use. He has also announced that he will try to cut down on his household’s carbon footprint, particularly in travelling. For these and other reasons, in 2007 he was the tenth person to win the Global Environmental Citizen Award from Harvard Medical School’s Center for Health and the Global Environment, which was presented to him by Al Gore and Meryl Streep.
