It makes intuitive sense that, other things being equal, a bright light would take more energy to run than a softer one. However, there are actually many other factors that are much more important in determining the efficiency of lighting. Traditional incandescent light bulbs wast a lot of energy compared to more efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs), or LED bulbs. Today there are many different brands of CFLs and LED lights available, which produce varying shade of light and different light intensities. A CFL or LED bulb will almost always be a much more efficient lighting choice than an incandescent bulb, regardless of the intensity of light produced, and a bright CFL or LED can be a lot more efficient than a dimmer incandescent.
