Is the black smog that comes from diesel engines bad for the environment?

yes of course.  Anytime you see exhaust, especially when it is the deep brown or black color, you know that there is carbon being released.

These combined emissions from all the cars and factories and so on, are what causes the smog problem that is VERY visible in cities like LA and Denver.

It is bad for our environment (plants, animals, ozone layer) and bad for us.  Smog has been linked to health problems like asthma, especially in children.  Living close to a freeway, or in high smog areas is linked with increased incidence of childhood asthma, especially for the most active children.
