Black peat is substance produced by the decomposition of and breakdown of mosses and other marsh inhabiting plants.  Sphagnum Moss (aka Bog Moss) is a specific species of moss (sphagnum cymbifolium). It is pale-green and is found in bogs and marshes, and has various economic and medical uses.   Black peat is more like a compost mix, so you could have black peat that has Sphagnum moss in it, but they are not the same thing.
