Is biomass better for the environment than biofuel?

Biomass includes things like corn kernels, soybeans, canola oil, and much more.  Biofuel is made from this gamet of materials.  They are converted using either biochemical, chemical or thermochemical conversion techniques.  One of the biggest problems in using biomass, turning into biofuel, and using this as energy, is the fact that in many ways making the fuel takes more energy than it saves us.
