Is biofuel really a lot better for the environment than gasoline?

Biofuels are cleaner for the environment in at least two different ways. First, the manufacturing of biofuels is cleaner. It is not susceptible to the same hazards in manufacturing as petroleum fuels (reference the recent BP-Gulf fiasco).

Secondly, the exhaust is much less toxic.

What xmanmonk wrote is correct, the only correlation between biofuel and regular petroleum based fuel is that they release stored Carbon from the fuel into the atmosphere as CO2.  However biofuels do not release additional pollutants that are commonly associated with gasoline.  Biofuel is less harmful in the manufacturing process and in the combustion process.  Overall, much healthier for the environment than conventional, ‘dirty’ fuels.
