The greenest mode of transportation involves your own two feet and would be walking. It is wonderful exercise, burns more calories than walking, is less stressful than bike commuting, hills are much easier for walkers to handle than bikers, and offers more accessible areas for walkers.
While walking or running is of course the greenest way to travel, if long distances or a heavy load rule out those options biking is definitely your best bet. To make it as green as possible, buy a used bike and make sure you keep up with any minor repairs.
