Coal ash has a number of negative effects on both the environment and on people. According to the EPA pollution related to coal ash has been shown to cause increases in cancer and non-cancer health risks. Areas that are near coal ash disposal sites have a cancer risk 900 times greater than what is considered acceptably by experts. Coal ash disposal sites also release a number of toxins like arsenic, lead, boron, selenium, cadmium, thallium, and others at levels that can seriously harm the environment and the people living nearby.
