Is beef production the largest cause of deforestation?

No. While a contributing factor it is not the largest cause. In a study in 1996 Robert Repetto working for the World Resources Institute ranked commercial logging (Timber trade) as the most significant method of tropical deforestation.

The reason is simple economics. Rainforest land converted to beef production or cattle operations yields 60 $USD per acre while the Timber harvested can yield 400 $USD per acre. Thus more people entered the logging industry than the slash and burn cattle industry.
