Balsa is classified as a hardwood tree. However, as anyone who has worked with balsa wood knows, the wood is extremely soft. The reason for the classification has to do with the leaves, and not the wood itself.
However, the wood is fairly strong. This is because the surface has a mix of cellulose and lignin.
Due to balsa woods light soft characteristics, it is often used in model building and even for wooden surfboards.
