Since there are several models for commercial jet, I will go by the most common, the boeing 747, which uses about 1gallon of fuel per second (3,600 gallons per hour). So a 10 hour flight would use about 36,000 gallons of fuel. Despite this seemingly large amount of fuel used, you must also take into acount that a plane is carying anywhere from 200-580 passengers plus cargo, so in fact a plane still gets about a miles to the gallon per person.
