While the automobile is not the only reason for the oil spill and did not directly cause it, it is certainly a major indirect cause. Automobiles use a lot of oil and the majority of the oil that the BP oil rig was producing. If automobiles did not run on gasoline and isntead ran on electricity (which would still have the potential for environmental problems in its own right), then chances are there wouldn’t have been a need for the BP oil rig. However, oil is used in other industries, so it would be unfair to place all of the blame on the automobile because it is possible that the oil rig would still have been running and the problem would have occured just the same.
