Is an automatic or manual transmission more efficient?

It really depends, but in general the manual transmission is considered more efficient. It uses a mechanical clutch to transfer engine torque to the drive wheels. Manual transmissions do not require a torque converter, saving weight. In addition, manual transmissions require very little engine power and do not require the hydraulics for clutch engagement.

Manual transmission is more efficient.  Automatic transmissions require more gears to function which creates more rubbing of metal which in turn creates more friction.  Friction reduces your car’s efficiency.  Vehicles with manual transmissions get much more miles per gallon than ones with automatics do.
