Natural birth control methods include family planning and fertility awareness, such as the rhythm method, ovulation method, Standard Days method, and the sympto-thermal method. The rhythm method is based on three ideas: women ovulate 14 days before menstruation occurs, sperm can survive inside a woman for 3 days, and that an egg can only be fertilized within 24 hours of release from the ovaries. So, you can count back from the date of your period to understand when ovulation occurred. However, this method is not necessary applicable; ovulation may not occur regularly each month. This method also does not protect against Sexually Transmitted Infections. See http://www.epigee.org/guide/natural.html for information about other natural birth control methods.
There is withdrawel and the rythmn method that we’ve all heard about in sex ed. However lemon juice is becoming popular as a spermicide. Either douche with it before or after sex, or soak a sponge and insert into the vagina. It is best to dilute it first. Vitamin C has some contraceptive properties, sites recommend taking 1000 mg twice daily for 3 days after unprotected sex. No method is full proof though.
In medieval Europe through the Renaissance, women used halves of lemons and limes as means of birth control – a sort of natural fruit diaphragm.
