Are wood fires really bad? If so, what can be done to diminish the impact?

Wood fires do add to the CO2 levels in the atmosphere, in fact when relating it to the rainforest in Brazil, many believe that its the deforesting tactic of scorching the earth that does more harm to the atmosphere, when compared to deforesting.  However if one is deciding between burning wood or natural gas in their fireplace, stick to the basics.  Natural gas omits double the amount of CO2 as the equilolent of wood.
