Are wolfs endangered on other continents and in other countries?

That depends on what exactly you’re referring to as wolf.

The gray wolf, which is the one spread over entire Northern Hemisphere, is listed as least concern by IUCN, although it was once vulnerable. However, there are many subspecies of gray wolf, some of which were shown by recent studies to be separate species, that are not doing that great compared to the combined population. Here are a few that are at risk:

    • The Red Wolf of southeastern US is critically endangered
    • Eastern Canadian wolf is endangered
    • Italian Wolf subspecies is vulnerable
    • Himalayan Wolf is critically endangered

Some other canid mammals called wolves include the Maned Wolf of South America (vulnerable) and Ethiopian Wolf (endangered).
