Are whales really sensitive to noise pollution?

Noise pollution from ships, oil drilling and Navy tests do hurt whales, damaging their ability to use echolocation to find their way in the ocean, as well as often causing them to surface too quickly and die from gas bubble formation. The US Supreme Court has lifted restrictions on where the US Navy can perform its sonar exercises, so this problem is unlikely to go away anytime soon.
