Are we using a lot of biodiesel worldwide?

Yes, and more all the time. In 2006, the last year for which good statistics are available, the worldwide production of biodiesel fuel is about 6 million tons. Of that, about 4.9 million tons was produced in Europe, especially Germany where biodiesel is especially popular, and most of the rest in the US. Certainly biodiesel is a growth industry. Between 2002 and 2007, biodiesel production capacity exploded by 40%. As traditional sources of fuels become more expensive and less desirable due to environmental issues, biodiesel is expected to increase, and new potential sources, such as used vegetable oil, are being considered as new ways to manufacture it are developed.
