Are we spending a lot of money trying to find a good way to get rid of nuclear waste?

Yes, relatively.  In 2009, $1.7 billion was used for nuclear energy research and $6.5 billion to environmental cleanup.  How much exactly in that setup went to actively researching waste disposal is unclear.  Meanwhile, $1.1 billion was allocated to renewable energy research.
