House Bill 3013, passed in 2009, has directed state agencies to move forward in the process of designating marine reserves. In Oregon, the state’s Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Oregon Sea grant will hold public meetings on three potential marine reserve sites. In 2004 an ocean reserve protecting half a billion acres was set aside including land in four Latin American nations. In a final example, at http://www.usatoday.com/tech/science/environment/2009-01-05-mariana-trench_N.htm you can read about President Bush’s designation of the Mariana Trench Marine National Monument.
