Most photovoltaic cells (solar panels) work by storing the sun’s energy in a rechargeable battery. This battery then powers the appliances to which it is connected and can be used even at night time. In fact, many photovoltaic batteries can be used for days at a time (say if there were a long storm) without needing to be recharged.
To add, many people in Louisiana get solar specifically for hurricane power. They use the power charged from the panels to store in batteries for when there is no power, depending on the size of the system it can last for weeks@
