The food production of the United States could provide the necessary food, but not the same diversity. Thus, excess production here is exported, and foreign foods are imported.
While the United States probably has the capacity to feed all of the people in the United States, various factors prevent that from happening, such as diet and economics.
Thus, we currently utilize imported foods, but are not technically dependent on them.
