That depends on where you are. Certain countries and states in the U.S. have smoke bans near restaurants and other businesses. For instance, the state of California enacted a statewide smoking ban effective January 1, 1995, banning the activity in all enclosed workplaces in California and within 20 feet of such places, including restaurants and bars (bars were excluded until January 1, 1998). Another example is Iowa’s smoking ban legislation, which banned smoking from state properties, including public colleges such as the University of Iowa on July 1, 2008. For the most part however, you are allowed to smoke in almost all public places.
