In my opinion they are. In order to get us out of our cars we need to walk to the market, library, park, school, and even work. If there were walking paths that didn’t follow the grid, the grid that creates a psycho-geography of the car, then walking would be easier, and more pleasant.
Making walking easier and more pleasant helps us DO IT.
Yes they are. For a community to be considered sustainable, paths need to be incorporated through out the development promote alternative transportation opportunities. If a community is solely dependent on vehicles, then in my opinion it is not sustainable.
