It definitely seems that Wal-Mart is trying to shift towards solar power – although I haven’t heard as much about wind. It’s going to take a little while for this to be implemented wide-scale, but they’ve gotten the ball rolling by installing solar panels on 30 different stores in California and Arizona according to an article from September.
Walmart’s recently opened distribution center in Balzac, Alberta, Canada, is powered by two 30-kilowatt wind turbines and 16 solar panels. This is enough wind energy to power forty average Canadian homes and enough solar energy to heat twenty 40-gallon tanks of water. It also contains other eco-friendly innovations such as LED lighting, an ammonia-cooled refrigeration system, and energy-efficient dock doors and doorways.
