Yes, the United States has a very competent nuclear industry. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (and other organizations like the Institute for Nuclear Power Operations) maintains strict measures to ensure the safety of nuclear plants. There has never been a life lost as a direct result of a U.S. nuclear plant. Plants that were built in the 1970s are still operating today, with many stations planning license extensions and power uprates. Seventeen power companies in the U.S. are making plans to build more than 30 new nuclear plants.
