Uggs are made from sheepskin, and generally these types of shoes are treated with chemicals for durability. There are no eco-friendly claims on UGG’s website, although the company is involved in philanthropic work. A great eco-friendly alternative to UGGS is Warmbat boots. The company offers a line of shoes that have sheepskin processed through environmentally friendly techniques.
Another option are these super cool VEGAN UGGS at splendicity.com.
Also, this was a nice write up on the afore mentioned warmbat company.
I would argue that Uggs are not environmentally friendly because they are made of leather, and the meat/dairy/leather industry is generally unfriendly to animals and the environment. I agree with “lisaleilani” that you should look into vegan versions of Uggs.
