Are turtles a good pet for children?

Depends, and definitely not always.  While they can be relatively low maintenance, there are huge salmonella concerns, and homes with children under 5 or the elderly (or anyone else in frail health) should not have turtles because of the risk of salmonella.  Also, it’s worth considering that turtles can have an incredibly long lifespan–think 40 to 70 years!!  Personally, that reason alone is enough of a deterrent for me.  I’m 24, and not ready for a friend-for-life.  The links in the citations are about turtles, and the links in this paragraph are about figuring out the right pet for you.
