Are military training practices bad for the environment?

Military operations are certainly not good for the environment because of the large amount of fuel required by their machinery. In addition, the pollutants released into the atmosphere from the myriad of private support industries that manufacture products they need to conduct their training operations is harmful. It would be difficult to make an argument to suggest that training exercises or test bombings are good for the environment. In response to substantial fuel costs, the military has decided to introduce hybrid vehicles (see website). Ideally, these will also be used in training exercises.
