Are those old wood shingle roofs efficient at keeping the hot air in and cold air out?

To a certain extent shaker roofing provides some insulation, but steel or concrete tiles may be better alternatives. The shaker tiles are more expensive, could rot or get moldy and may not last as long as newer materials. I know some sustainable building practices recommend light-colored asphalt tiles or steel roofing to better reflect the heat from the summer sun, for instance.
