Are there zero emissions trains?

The Norfolk Southern Corp. created a prototype battery-powered train, the NS 999. It will be run using a series of 1,080 lead-acid 12-volt batteries and will have zero emissions. The train can go three shifts without recharging, and it recharges while braking. It is only a prototype at the moment and was created in conjuction with the US Department of Energy, the Federal Railroad Administration, and Penn State.
