Yes, wildfires are a natural occurrence in the Florida Everglades. They typically occur due to lightning during early Summer rains, which come on the heels of Winter and Spring dry spells that make good kindling out of trees and shrubs. Unfortunately, as development and the diversion of water by roads and canals continues to dry out the ‘Glades, such wildfires are becoming increasingly destructive, outweighing some of their positive benefits like clearing debris and removing overgrown mangrove islands.
