Are there wild chinchillas in the US?

    No, there are no wild chinchillas in the U.S. They used to range throughout the Andes mountains in South America, but their habitat has shrunk due to hunting for their pelts. As a result, both species of chinchilla are critically endangered. The short-tailed chinchilla can currently be found in Chile, Argentina, and possibly Bolivia. The long-tailed chinchilla can currently only be found in Chile.
