There is actually an interesting political history of solar water panels on the roof of the White House. Then-Pres. Jimmy Carter first installed them in 1979, but his successor Pres. Ronald Reagan removed them. Then in 2003 Pres. George Bush had solar photovoltaic panels installed, as well as two smaller solar thermal water systems to be used for landscaping and the presidential pool/spa. The Park Service was actually responsible for the installation, and admits that the system is small but symbolic of the agency’s committment to renewable energy.
