Bullfights have been popular in Spain since 711 A.D., and continue to draw around a million spectators annually. While animal rights groups have criticized the sport as cruel and dangerous, as each match typically results in the death of either a matador or bull, fans maintain that the sport has cultural value and should be allowed to continue. Bullfighting is also popular in Portugal, some cities of Southern France, and some Latin American countries.
