Are there species of fish that should not be released when caught in a lake?

This is dependent on the natural reservoir of species in the respective lake. Some species are non-indigenous in lakes and can be a large threat to a lake’s ecosystem. I live in the state of California and the Department of Fish and Game California Freshwater Fishing Regulation states that no Northern Pike, dead or alive, be released into California’s lakes. Researching your respective state’s fishing regulations will state what species should not be released into the lake.
