Salmon is a term used to describe several species of fish in the family of Salmonidae. While all salmon are born is fresh water and most migrate to the ocean (Pacific and Atlantic) returning only to spawn, there are some that spend their entire lives in fresh water. Steelhead Salmon, land-locked salmon and Kokanee salmon all spend their entire lives within fresh water as do rainbow trout, a relative of salmon.
