An energy conservation program was created in 1975 to set efficiency targets. Then, in 1978, mandatory efficiency targets were set for 13 major appliances by the National Energy Conservation and Policy Act. Then in 1987 the National Appliance Energy Conservation Act set the first national efficiency standards for home appliances, which is what we still use to this day. The Energy Policy Acts of 1992 and 2005, and the more recent 2007 Energy Independence and Security act of 2007 are the most recent updates to the rules on appliance efficiency. These acts are Federally mandated and help to save the environment and consumers money in the long term.
