Actually, there is a program that does just that! The Replanting the Rainforest project, started by the Open World Foundation is working throughout several regions in Brazil. They are hoping to reduce the harmful effects caused by an overproduction of methane in the area due to dairy farms and cattle ranches. On the foundation’s website there is also a wealth of information about the number of trees needed to filter the carbon produced by the average house, car, and airplane flight.
There are also numerous small organizations throughout the South and Central American rain forests that plant trees as part of a larger reforestation program. Here are some (of the hundreds of projects):
