Trellis Earth plates are claimed to be made from corn. Their plates are a non-toxic, disposable alternative to the regular plastic plates that are used on a regular basis. Their plates seem to be pretty sturdy under food weight and are also microwaveable. You can buy these plates at http://www.trellisearth.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=7.
Yes there are new kinds of biodegradable plastic and there are plastic plates made from corn plastic. Plastic is traditionally a petroleum product and these new biodegradable plastics are petroleum free. They are sustainable and technology has improved enough that they are now very durable. These plastic products are still quite expensive when compared to their petroleum based counterparts, but hopefully as they are more widely used their prices will fall.
