There are currently plans to build a (now) unpaved road through the Serengeti National Park. Initially the plans were for a paved road but recent amendments to the plan show an unpaved road with multiple checkpoints to control traffic.
The road is being constructed in order to ease various transportation problems that were affecting the poorer communities surrounding the park.
Several conservation groups showed outrage at the idea of a paved road through the Serengeti so officials altered the plans to make it unpaved, ensuring the groups that there would be no tarmac or pavement running through the Park. They also said they would ensure coverage of the road by the Tanzania National Parks Authority so that there would be no abuse and every attempt would be made to keep the road as safe and natural as possible.
