Yes. New York City, for example, used to be covered in forests. Much of the east coast has been developed but was once covered in temperate forests. Of the forests that do remain, many are not primary forests and have been previously cut for timber. Most urban areas in temperate areas were once covered in trees. The US remains the ranked 7th among countries for deforestation. Much of the remaining primary forest cover is in Alaska.
