Most “spin-on” oil filters are disposable, however, it is strongly encouraged that you recycle them. The purpose of recycling the filter is to dispose of the oil properly so that the chemicals do not seep into groundwater. The lube4life website claims that: “Experts estimate that a 100% recycling would allow recovering of 160,000 tons of steel and 17.8 million Gallons of oil.” It is the oil itself that should be recycled so even if a more “disposable” oil filter is created, throwing it away would waste millions of gallons of recyclable oil.
