It is somewhat difficult to name the exact number of reservoirs in North America today as the trend in building reservoirs in the US has tended towards smaller ones in size. In the 1950s and 60s the US was second only to the ex-Soviet Union in the number of large reservoirs being built. Today, however, the trend has reversed and there are numerous smaller reservoirs which may not be well known. In the late 20th century, around 1997, there were a total of 915 reservoirs in the US but the total number of reservoirs on earth grows by several hundred a year. The total number of lakes in the US today is 65,559. Therefore, there are thousands more lakes than reservoirs in the US.
