I couldn’t find the exact numbers of herring or anchovies. There are too few census-takers of the sea, I suppose. We can, however, make a rough guess of the comparative populations by looking at fishing data. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reports that 148 million tons of anchovies were caught in 2008 compared with 108 million tons of herring. So it seems that anchovies are a bit more populous than herring.
