Are there more birth defects in West Virgina because of the coal?

That is very possible.  I could not find any publications on human birth defect rates in West Virginia due to coal mining, but there is an article on selenium from coal mines causing birth defects in fish.

I also found another article on birth defects in China due to coal mining, so it is very likely that it is also happening in the US.  The coal mining town Shanxi, has a birth defect rate six times that of the national average in China.
