According to the United Nations there are an estimated 3,000,000 shipwrecks on the ocean floor. These shipwrecks date back to the 13th and 14th centuries. There are various causes for them. Many were sunk in battle, but most were lost to inclement weather. While shipwrecks sometimes can create artificial reefs for marine species to flourish, they often cause an environmental hazard spilling oil and gasoline into the ocean. A good example of this is the wreck of the New Carissa off the coast of Oregon.
