Their are different kinds of fruit flies. The “common fruit fly” is fairly common in America and is used extensively for biology and genetics research. There are several kinds of fruit flies that are considered invasive species, and recently California has had problems with the Mediterranean Fruit Fly.
The lifespan of fruit flies is very short, and they multiply very quickly. It would be very difficult to count the number of fruit flies at any given time. This is an interesting article on using fruit flies to research the human brain.
