There are many species of insects and spiders which have evolved to resemble ants – either as adults, or during the nymphal stages of their lives. There’s a very good reason for this evolutionary tendency: if you look like an ant, many predatory animals will likely leave you alone. Ants tend to have sharp bites, stings, and other defenses that make them unattractive meals for most birds and other animals. For this reason various wasps, spiders, flies, true bugs, and others have evolved to look like ants during at least one stage of their lives.
